Victoria Everman Interviews Peligrosa Knits' Adam Sidell and Nico Morrison

Victoria Everman is a Jane of all trades quickly on her way to becoming a green authority, thanks to her informative writing on blogs like Greenopia and her own eponymous blog, Victoria-E.com. Most recently, she took some time to interview one of our favorite design duos, the husband and wife team behind Peligrosa Knits, Adam Sidell and Nico Morrison.

For some insight into what it takes to create a Fashionably Responsible line of hand-dyed, exquisitely produced organic and eco-friendly knitwear, check out this piece today. And check out Victoria's other Eco Fashion posts for info on more Fashion Ethic favorites like Prairie Underground and Emily Katz.

Fashion Ethic Hearts Softlife at Etsy

From Daily Candy Seattle to Etsy, straight to our heart, we wanted to share the work of Softlife's Coco Howard, who can be found on Etsy. Her fantastical stuffed creations have individual personalities and many are made with recycled sweaters and whatnot, which makes her hip to the Fashionably Responsible tip.

We here at Fashion Ethic are partial to this "Cranky Cephalopod", maybe because her stripes match our tissue, or perhaps because she's described thusly:
"She is crabby, due to the crumby weather she is forced to put up with this summer in her home town, Seattle. Perhaps you can cheer her up... then again maybe not."

Hmmm...sounds like us some days. Perhaps she just needs a preview of the amazing eco-fashions we have coming in the next few weeks...enough to make anyone smile at a cloudy 60 degree August day! :)

Sustainable KIDS Arrives at Fashion Ethic

Fashion Ethic is proud to announce the new addition of KIDS wear for boys and girls aged 5 and up. The first pieces to arrive are from Sustainable Kids, a joint label from Prophetik and Convoy Apparel (makers of customer-fave Sustainable Collective).

Not only are they cute as the dickens, but each piece is eco-friendly (using organic cotton or recycled fibers and low-impact dyes and/or manufacturing) AND raises money and awareness for the Hands and Feet Project, building an orphanage in Haiti. Each item from Sustainable Kids comes with a postage-paid, pre-addressed box (as shown) so that the child receiving the clothes may experience the joy of sending a small toy, toiletry, or book to another child in need. Plus, part of the proceeds from the sale of Sustainable Kids apparel is donated to the orphanage fund, so you can feel as good as your kids will!

The first arrivals, the reversible Johanne dress and the Variola jacket are available NOW and more items, including boys', are expected to arrive before school starts! To be alerted of new arrivals, please email us at customerservice@fashionethic.com

Spoiler Alert: How the US Olympic Team made a Fashionably Responsible Opening Ceremony

We were so pleased to hear yesterday that the US Olympic team chose runner Lopez Lomong to carry the American flag and lead the team in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic games in China. Lomong was born in Sudan, and came to America as one of the "Lost Boys" after being kidnapped at age 6 and spending 10 years in a refugee camp.

What makes this an especially significant choice for the team is the fact that Olympic-host country China continues to financially support the Sudanese government even as the nation continues a nasty 'civil' war and allows mass violence against its own people in the Darfur region. Also to note is the fact that China recently denied visa entry to some non-competing US athletes who had pledged their support to Team Darfur, a group of athletes devoted to raising awareness of the situation in Darfur.

There is an excellent interview with Lopez Lomong at the TimesOnline site that I recommend reading (below). I have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know some refugees resettled here in the US and advocating for refugee issues through the IRC Seattle office, and Darfur is a cause close to my heart. I have never felt more American than when I see a new refugee arrive at the airport full of hope, or watch them light up simply at the sight of indoor running water in their new apartment. Their sunny attitudes in light of the tremendous hardships they have faced are nothing short of incredible.

So I praise the US Olympic team and its captains for making a Fashionably Responsible choice as to who would best represent them. Seeing Lopez Lomong carry the flag (just in photos!) has renewed my sense of pride in my country and I hope each and every athlete will hear us cheering tonight as we watch the (very) delayed telecast of the opening ceremony!

And as a total fashionista side note, look for the team to be decked out in Ralph Lauren from head to toe. No word on use of eco-friendly or sustainable fabrics, but at least this time they went with an American company! (sorry Roots.) More on the fashions can be found at ShopDiary.com

Fall08 Preview: Sublet Clothing

The Sublet line marks their second season with fabulous pieces in their signature organic cotton/bamboo blend fabric that drapes like a dream and feels like heaven. The pieces for Fall all have "B" names, after the label's debut Spring season with pieces like the "Allison," the "Anais" and the "Anne"...are we sensing a pattern here?

One thing that is for certain is that designer duo Tara and Inessah have put a lot of thought into their Fall collection and chosen a few uber of-the-moment colors for their sophisticated-but-comfy creations. Witness the Alex tee in "Taxi" and Bianca dress in "Berry", shown above. They arrive (with a few other fabulous garments) at Fashion Ethic next month, but you saw them here first.
